In July of 2024, Barton Arts Movement (BAM) unveiled a mural at Al Burns Memorial Field, home of the Great Bend Bat Cats — a tribute to the heart and soul of America’s favorite pastime.
Commissioned by BAM and painted by talented Kansas artist Layne Stafford, the mural captures the spirit of community, baseball, and local pride. Featuring the iconic phrase, “Is this Heaven? No, it’s Great Bend, KS!” — a nod to the beloved film Field of Dreams — this striking artwork celebrates the momentum and legacy of the Bat Cats, while connecting generations through a shared love of the game.
The mural stands as a symbol of what makes Great Bend special: tradition, teamwork, and a deep sense of place. It was made possible through the incredible generosity of lead donor Sheryl Cheely, with additional support from the BAM general fund, Bauer Pike Law, Brad & Sarah Shirer, and more than 40 individual donors who rallied behind the project.
📸 In a fitting close to the 2024 season, the Bat Cats team joined Layne Stafford, donors, and BAM volunteers to celebrate the mural’s completion — a lasting legacy for fans and families to enjoy for years to come.
Thank you to all who made this vision a reality. Your support brings color, culture, and community pride to the heart of Great Bend.
For added fun, BAM volunteers recently added some Ballpark Mice to surprise 2025 patrons. An idea from Sheryl Cheely, patrons can be on the look-out for these little fans at the ballpark!
